Embodying Retreat with Luke and Isabella, Oct 29- Nov 1

Embodying the nervous system through relating to oneself and others

Retreat facilitator: Luke Bache, Isabella dos Santos

Embodying the nervous system

This year has been challenging for all of us in different ways,  especially on our nervous systems’ individually and collectively.

In the ever increasing pace of life it’s easy to be stuck in the fight or flight or we burn out. The classic example embodied in a difficulty of relaxing and resting and instead either being on alert all the time, both physically and mentally or collapsing from exhaustion.

We therefore want to share the processes we have learned regarding ways to navigate the nervous system which we have found help a person actively rest, become more resilient , centred and grounded. Which we believe is vital to meet the inevitable ups and downs of daily life and to do it from a place of choice rather than being stuck in mindless habits or reactions.

“Resilience  - the capacity to bend with the wind go with the flow, bounce back from adversity, is essential to the survival and thriving of human beings and human societies.”  / Linda Graham

In these three days we explore and rediscover how to be with oneself and others with ease, safety and connection.

Exploration themes during the days

Through the lens of the Polyvagal system
We will navigate  and embody different stages of the nervous system; Fight Flight / Freeze and Social Engagement and highlight the importance of each state in our daily life. We would like to demystify that one part of the nervous system is “bad” that they are all important and interconnected.

Story follows state
Our internal state creates the story we play out in the world. The cognitive story that we play out through thoughts or actions is a referral to what is going on in our nervous system. Rather than being stuck in the stories and habits from  the head, when we understand this and embody this knowing it frees us to be in the present moment and to have a deeper choice in our response to life.

Breath work
The more we are in harmony with our breath the more likely it becomes that we  notice when we are out of balance. The breath usually matches or proceeds a change in our thoughts or our emotions. So rather than meeting life through our stuck reactions, can we start to utilise our breath to bring choice and a wise response to life? Breath is the bridge in between the unconscious and the conscious, so stepping onto the bridge can lead to relaxation and social engagement. We have the ability to not only regulate our selves through awareness of the breath but as we find our calm branch of the nervous system we can invite others to regulate theirs.

IFS
The internal family systems life model holds the belief that we all develop different layers of identity in response to life and yet beneath all these layers there is a deeper wisdom. Through this lens we will learn about our different layers and identities and learn situations when they might take over and cause us to act on auto pilot. All these personalities have a good intention and when we can learn about them, listen to them and see them then life becomes a lot easier to navigate from that deeper place.

Yoga and movement practices
To help guide us into an exploration of our nervous system, breath and different layers physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  We invite you to discover  ways in which movement can be a vehicle to sense, name and identify what is going on inside our systems ultimately helping us relate to ourselves and others from a more spacious place.
